An apple a day does not, alas, keep the doctor day, scientists reported in JAMA on April Fool's Day. Those who did eat more apples tended to go to the doctor less - but they also tended to be better educated and non-smokers, factors potentially more relevant than apple-eating. If apple the day slogan tells us anything, it's the belief (or gullibility) in superfoods. If only staying healthy was as easy as an apple a day!
In order to probe the old "apple a day keeps the doctor away" adage, researchers writing in JAMA Internal Medicine compared people who typically eat apples every day with people who don't, measuring how much each group went to see a doctor.
